Remembering Ken Regan

2012 has come to a close and upon reflecting on the many wonderful moments we had to share as a company, we couldn't discuss the year's events without mentioning Ken Regan and what a great loss we experienced with his death in late November.

We first worked with Regan on his 2007 book, Knockout: The Art of Boxing where he showcased photos of Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Oscar de la Hoya and many more, both in and out of the ring.

In 2011, we released All Access: The Rock 'n' Roll Photography of Ken Regan. Over 300 pages and nearly 5 pounds, it really is the ultimate coffee table book for music lovers.

Ken was there to witness it all. His photos will walk you through music history, and some pretty amazing moments in sports, dating back to the 60s.

Photography has changed since Ken first started out, but he will be missed by many. We are honored to have published his art and memories with fans who, no doubt, will continue to share Ken's work with future generations.

Celebrate Aviation History with Peter McMillan

In 1919, the Vickers Vimy WWI bomber achieved two aviation milestones: the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and the first flight from England to Australia, essentially proving the viability of long-distance air travel.

Seventy-five years later, a group of aviation enthusiasts restored a vintage Vickers Vimy and duplicated the pioneering efforts to remind the world of the courageous heroes and their daring achievements.

The new team duplicated the original as closely as possible, from the hand-sewn cotton fabric on its wings to its steel bracing wires made in the same factory as the original. But the spirited group found their own challenges in re-creating these voyages and faced struggles of weather, exhaustion, and even engine breakdown. Their personal logs and stories are told here, complete with cockpit-view photos along the way.

Now, fans of history and aviation can meet author Peter McMillan and learn more about these historic flights at his book signing and presentation November 4, 2012 at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, California.

This Day in Music History (1964)

Aug 19, 1964: The Beatles kick off first U.S. tour at San Francisco's Cow Palace

When the Beatles first landed in the U.S. before their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, photographer Ken Regan was there to capture the moment. Later that same year, in August of 1964, Regan was there again as the Beatles took to the stage for their first U.S. concert.

In his own words, and an excerpt from his book, "All Access: The Rock 'N' Roll Photography of Ken Regan," he noted his surprise when he realized who the man was he was about to photograph:

When The Beatles returned to America in August, 1965, for their second tour and played the Sullivan show again, I got one of my favorites. Walking the aisles, one audience member caught my eye: an older man sitting with his fingers plugged in his ears to mute the high-pitched squeals. As I moved in for this terrific shot, I got a closer look and realized I was photographing the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.

Leonard Bernstein and his family take in the concert, August 1965 (photo by Ken Regan)

To see more of Ken Regan's class photographs featuring The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and more, pick up a copy of his photography collection that GQ described as "an exhaustive, gorgeously composed inside look at some of rock 'n' roll's most famous and famously private artists in intimate and outrageous settings."

These, and other "Accidental Inventions" are shared with vivid images and fun stories from author Birgit Krols in a small little gallery of items from pop culture, foods, gadgets, toys and tools that we now consider indispensable.

Birgit Krols is a former film journalist who earned her living interviewing international movie stars before becoming editor-in-chief of a city lifestyle magazine. The author of several books, Krols lives in Antwerp, Belgium.

Accidental Inventions

It's hard to imagine a world without Coca-Cola, Post-its, or Velcro, but have you ever stopped to wonder how and when these items came to be? Accidental Inventions reveals the fascinating stories behind the toys, foods, gadgets, and tools we now consider indispensable. From peanut butter to penicillin, roller skates to radioactivity, dozens of essential inventions are spotlighted.

Fully illustrated with over 240 photos, Accidental Inventions traces the path from inception to "ah ha!" for more than 60 products, and introduces the cast of clever, hardworking inventors behind them. Engaging narrative and colorful design make these stories accessible to readers of all ages, illuminating the happy collision of accident and inspiration that would profoundly change our lives.

Accidental Inventions: The Chance Discoveries that Changed our Lives

America’s incredible success is primarily due to the dreams and inventions of its many citizens. Few people realize however, that from the time the U.S. Patent Office was formed by Thomas Jefferson in 1790 and throughout the industrial revolution, inventors were required to submit a working, scale model of their invention when applying for a patent. The Rothschild Collection is the world’s largest gathering of viewable U.S. Patent Models.

The Curious World of Patent Models exhibit will include a variety of Patent Models that children and adults alike will enjoy: household, agricultural, medical, toys, musical instruments, tools and more. Here is the list of the traveling exhibit dates and venues through 2013.

The Dickens Bicentenary

Charles Dickens was an intriguing personality. He was a man far ahead of his time, a Victorian whose ideals and outlook on life were better suited to the modern world. With beautiful photographs and artworks, and many never before seen facsimile documents from Dickens's own archives, Charles Dickens brings to life this extraordinary and complex man, whose name remains internationally revered and whose work continues to inspire us today.
Charles Dickens is the definitive interactive illustrated guide to the man and his works. Produced in association with the Charles Dickens Museum, London, it follows Dickens from early childhood, including his time spent as a child labourer, and looks at how he became the greatest celebrity of his age, and how he still remains one of Britain's most renowned literary figures, even in the twenty-first century. It is an intimate look at what he was like as a husband, father, friend and employer; at his longing to be an actor, his travels across North America, his year spent living in Italy and his great love of France. It introduces Dickens's fascinating family and his astonishing circle of friends, and we discover when and how life and real-life personalities were imitated in his art.
